“When the Haydn CD was released, the Bach set was already proving successful, so Delos asked if I would record another Bach album. I’d always, from early on, played a few of the Lute Suites, but one or two I avoided on 6 string guitar, as the original tessitura is so much larger. This was a great opportunity to finally play them all on the Brahms Guitar with the full original range.
This disc has a somewhat different atmosphere to the previous releases, and this is maybe due to the intensive way in which it was recorded and the dryer sound of the recording. From a general point of view, I feel these pieces to be, relative to the Bach ‘oeuvre’ as a whole, of the highest rank. It’s marvelous music, and fundamental repertoire for us guitarists.” |
